Best Red Wines Under $100 in Chicago — Curated by Off Premise

Finding a great bottle of red in Chicago isn't hard. Finding one that's actually worth the money, from a shop that knows why it's on the shelf? That's a different story. We're Off Premise, a curated bottle shop at 1128 W Armitage Ave in Lincoln Park, and every red we carry has a reason to be here. Here are four bottles we'd confidently hand anyone walking through our door right now.

Les Clefs du Caladas Côtes du Rhône — $25

If you're not yet buying Côtes du Rhône as your house red, this bottle will convert you. Organic and biodynamic, this is a 70% Grenache Noir-led blend with Syrah, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre rounding it out. That's a classic Southern Rhône lineup, and when it's farmed this carefully, you taste the difference. Expect ripe red fruit, dried herbs, a little garrigue — that wild, scrubby earthiness that makes Rhône wines so distinctive. Drink it with a roast chicken, a charcuterie spread, or honestly just a Tuesday. At $25, it's one of the most overdelivering bottles on our floor.

Les Clefs du Caladas Châteauneuf-du-Pape — $55

Same family estate, bigger wine. Châteauneuf-du-Pape carries one of the most storied appellations in France, and this bottling earns that reputation. You're getting more concentration, more complexity, and more aging potential than the Côtes du Rhône — think dark fruit, leather, cracked pepper, warm spice. At $55, it sits in a sweet spot where you're drinking a genuine Châteauneuf without the sticker shock of the trophy bottles. If you want to impress someone at a dinner party without explaining how much you spent, this is the move.

Both Caladas bottles come from the same family estate in the Southern Rhône. Buy them side by side and you'll understand exactly what an extra $30 and a stricter appellation buys you. It's one of the best education pairings we offer.

Lunaria Coste di Moro Montepulciano d'Abruzzo — $25

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is criminally underrated, and Lunaria is one of the producers doing it right. The Coste di Moro is described as impenetrable ruby-red for a reason — this is a dense, deeply colored wine with serious grip and structure. Think dark cherries, bitter chocolate, a touch of earthiness, and firm tannins that hold everything together. It's made for food: braised meat, pasta with a rich ragù, aged cheese. Abruzzo punches well above its weight class, and at $25 this bottle proves it every time.

Il Borro Borrigiano Toscana — $26

Tuscany for $26 sounds like a compromise. This one isn't. The Borrigiano is a dynamic, ruby-red Toscana IGT with purple reflections in the glass — a sign of freshness and youth in the fruit. Il Borro is a respected Tuscan estate, and this is their approachable entry point without the watered-down energy that usually comes with that phrase. Versatile is the right word here: it works at the dinner table, it works at the wine bar, it works when you just want something Italian and don't want to overthink it.
