Finding a genuinely good bottle of red wine under $50 in Chicago shouldn't feel like a gamble. At Off Premise, we taste before we stock — nothing hits the shelf because it fills a price point. These are four reds we're genuinely excited about right now, all under $50.
This is the kind of bottle that makes you rethink what $25 can do. Farmed organically and biodynamically in the southern Rhône, it's a classic GSM-style blend — 70% Grenache Noir for red fruit and warmth, 20% Syrah for structure and a little pepper, with Cinsault and Mourvèdre rounding out the edges. It drinks with more complexity than it has any right to at this price. Earthy, bright, slightly herbal. If you're into Old World reds with a sense of place, this one delivers.
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is one of the most underrated value categories in Italian wine, and Lunaria's Coste di Moro is a strong argument for paying more attention to it. Deep, impenetrable ruby in the glass. You're getting dark cherry, a touch of earth, soft grippy tannins, and enough acidity to make it genuinely food-friendly. Lunaria farms sustainably in the hills of Abruzzo — this isn't mass-produced plonk, it's a real expression of the variety and the region. At $25, it's one of the best buys in the shop.
Beaujolais gets dismissed too often. People remember Beaujolais Nouveau and write off the whole region — but a grower Beaujolais from a serious producer is a completely different animal. Domaine Romy works the southern stretches of the appellation, and this is light, fresh, and dangerously easy to drink. Gamay at its most charming: red berries, a little floral lift, low tannin, great acidity. Serve it slightly cool. It's the wine you open on a Tuesday and somehow finish the whole bottle.
If you want a California Cab that tastes like a California Cab — structured, oak-aged, dark fruit forward — without paying the premium tier price, Ancient Peaks is your answer. It comes from the Santa Margarita Ranch in Paso Robles, one of the more serious AVAs on the Central Coast. You're getting real structure here: firm tannins, cassis, a hint of cedar and vanilla from the oak. It's not trying to be subtle. It's trying to be a great Cab, and it is one.
