Finding a great Scotch at a fair price in Chicago shouldn't require a PhD. But walk into the wrong shop and you're choosing between dusty bottles with no context and a staff member who'd rather be somewhere else. We built Off Premise to fix that. Here are four bottles currently on our shelves in Lincoln Park that punch well above their price point — and why each one is worth your money.
Start here if you think blended Scotch is a compromise. Named after whisky writer Charles MacLean, whose nose is literally insured for a million pounds, this is bottled at 92 proof — a deliberate choice that gives the spirit genuine backbone. You're getting more weight, more texture, and more complexity than anything else at this price in Chicago. If you've been reaching for Johnnie Walker Black out of habit, it's time to break that habit.
Bladnoch is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries, and Liora is their calling card — a Lowland single malt that's elegant without being boring. Lowlands get slept on because they're not peaty or showy, but that's the point. Think light orchard fruit, fresh cream, subtle floral notes. This is the bottle you open when you want Scotch that doesn't demand your full attention — it just rewards it. Perfect for warm-weather sipping or introducing someone to the category without scaring them off.
Here's where things get serious. This is a heavily peated, cask-strength single malt at $100 — a price that would be a steal even if it were mediocre, which it isn't. Twelve years of age rounds out what could otherwise be an aggressive peat bomb into something with genuine depth: campfire smoke up front, then sweetness underneath, then a long, warming finish. Add water if you want (cask strength rewards experimentation), or take it neat and let it build. Either way, this is the most whisky per dollar on this list.
Benrinnes is one of Speyside's best-kept secrets — a distillery that supplies the big blending houses and rarely gets credit by name. This independent bottling from The Single Malts of Scotland changes that. Eleven years old, finished in reserve casks, and hitting that sweet spot where Speyside's characteristic dried fruit and malt character meets genuine depth from extended maturation. If you want a Speyside that goes beyond Glenfiddich and Macallan without blowing your budget, this is your bottle.
One note on the Port Askaig 17 Year: Yes, it's $185 — just over our $150 cutoff — but if you're even remotely tempted by cask-strength Islay whisky, it's worth knowing we have it. Some budgets flex for the right bottle.
Region matters, but it's not everything. A Lowland can out-smoke a bad Islay. A blended Scotch can out-quality a mediocre single malt. What actually matters is who made it, how long it aged, and what the cask contributed. That's the conversation we're always ready to have in-store.
