Finding a great white wine in Chicago shouldn't require a sommelier on speed dial or a second mortgage. At Off Premise, we taste a lot so you don't have to guess. Here are four whites on our shelves right now that we'd genuinely recommend to anyone — from the $18 everyday pour to the cellar-worthy splurge.
Start here if you want the best value-per-sip on this list. Vinho Verde gets underestimated constantly, and that's your gain. Casa do Valle is an estate-grown expression — no blending from outside fruit, no shortcuts. Expect bright acidity, a whisper of spritz, and a dry, clean finish that makes it disappear faster than you planned. Crack this on a weeknight, pair it with seafood, or drink it alone on your back porch. At $18, you should have two bottles at all times.
This is the answer to everyone who thinks they don't like Chardonnay. Mazzolino ferments this in steel — no oak, no butter, no vanilla bomb. What you get instead is a lean, precise Chardonnay from Oltrepò Pavese in northern Italy, where the variety actually has somewhere interesting to go. Stone fruit, citrus zest, real minerality. It drinks like it costs twice as much. If you're converting an ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) person in your life, this is your vehicle.
Few grapes are as misunderstood as Riesling, and few producers make the case for it better than Lauer. The "Kern" is off-dry — yes, there's some residual sugar, but it's held in check by Saar acidity so precise it almost vibrates. The 2022 vintage shows concentrated stone fruit and citrus with a finish that lingers long after the glass is empty. This is the bottle you open when you want to change someone's mind about wine. It's also a phenomenal food wine: rich fish, Thai cuisine, anything with a little heat. At $50, it's a serious bottle at a price that doesn't ask much of you.
For the Chardonnay drinker who wants the full experience — structured, site-driven, with actual winemaking intention behind it — Pellet Estate's Sunchase Vineyard is the pick. This is California Chardonnay from a designated site, which means the wine is telling you something about a specific place rather than a stylistic formula. Expect texture, depth, and fruit that's ripe without being flabby. It's a step up in complexity from the Mazzolino Camara and worth every dollar of the price difference.
The through-line across all four bottles: these are wines made with intention. No filler, no style-by-committee. They're also priced in a range where you can actually drink them regularly, not just save them for occasions that never seem to arrive.
If you're skipping alcohol for any reason, the Saint Viviana is worth knowing about. It retains the crisp varietal character of Sauvignon Blanc — the herbaceous edge, the citrus snap — without the ABV. It's an honest option in a category full of compromises.
Off Premise is at 1128 W Armitage Ave in Lincoln Park. All four of these whites are in stock now.
