Most orange liqueurs ask you to work around them. Too sweet, too thin, too synthetic — they muddy a drink instead of sharpening it. Brovo Orange Curaçao does the opposite. Conceived by Laurent Lebec of Big Star right here in Chicago and produced by Brovo Spirits in Woodinville, Washington, this is a liqueur built the way a bartender thinks: layered, purposeful, and honest about what it is.
The foundation is a three-spirit blend — neutral cane spirit, neutral grain spirit, and a two-year French brandy. That brandy does real work. It adds depth and a subtle dried-fruit richness that single-base liqueurs simply can't replicate. On top of that, three distinct dried orange peels are brought in: sweet California Central Valley orange for brightness, bitter Laranha from Curaçao for complexity, and Seville orange from Spain for that characteristic tartness. Coriander, clove, hibiscus, and vanilla round out the botanical profile.
Sweetness comes from turbinado simple syrup — brown sugar, not white — which brings warmth without that flat, one-note saccharine hit. A touch of vegetable-based glycerin gives it body and a soft, coating mouthfeel. At 30% sugar content, it's rich but not cloying. There's real engineering here.
Three orange peels. Three spirits. One French brandy. This is what happens when a serious cocktail professional authors a liqueur formula.
Candied orange rind hits first — vivid and clean. The middle opens up with bitter citrus complexity and a whisper of clove. The finish is warm, faintly spiced, with vanilla and hibiscus trailing behind. Sip it neat or over a large cube and those botanical notes come forward in a way that reminds you this was designed to be tasted, not just used. It's genuinely worth a pour on its own before it ever touches a shaker.
If you're making margaritas, sidecars, or mai tais at home and you've been reaching for Cointreau out of habit, this is your upgrade. The triple-peel structure and brandy base add dimension that mass-market options don't offer at any price. It's also an underrated modifier in stirred drinks — a small pour in a boulevardier or old fashioned adds citrus lift without pulling the drink sweet. Bartenders will recognize immediately why Brovo has the reputation it does.
Build a classic sidecar — cognac, lemon juice, Brovo Curaçao — and let it sit for thirty seconds before you drink it. The brandy base in the Curaçao aligns naturally with the cognac, creating a seamless citrus-fruit bridge instead of the disjointed sweetness you get when the liqueur and the base spirit are working against each other. It's a small thing that makes a noticeably better drink.
At $35, this is priced like a workhorse and performs like a showpiece. That combination doesn't come around often.
