There are a lot of tequila brands. There are fewer tequila producers. G4 is made by the Camarena family at El Pandillo distillery in Jalisco, using agave from the Los Altos region. According to the brand, the family has made tequila since 1937 and spans four generations, with Felipe Camarena and his sons carrying on the work.
According to the producer, G4 is made with captured rainwater blended with mountain spring water. The agave is slow-roasted in stone ovens and distilled in copper stills.
The Blanco ($40) is a direct line to the agave — bright, herbaceous, with cooked agave sweetness, white pepper, and a lifted citrus quality. Drink it neat. Use it in a margarita where you actually want to taste the tequila. Either way, we think $40 is a serious value for what's in the bottle.
We like tequilas that are good because of how they're made, not because someone famous owns them. G4 is a bottle we're happy to put on the shelf.
