Hampden Estate is in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica. Its sugar operations began in 1753, and today it is known for high-ester pot still rum.
Hampden ferments in open-air wooden vats, where wild yeasts, mold, and bacteria take part in the fermentation, and distills in copper pot stills. Those methods are the reason Hampden is associated with esters, the aroma compounds that give a rum its fruity, funky character.
Hampden bottles its rum under "marks," each a different ester level. The estate produces eight, from OWH at the low end to DOK at the high end, which sits at the legal maximum ester count allowed by Jamaican law. HLCF, short for "Hampden Light Continental Flavored," is one of the higher-ester marks.
