There are bottles you buy because they taste great. Then there are bottles that represent something nearly gone from the world. Raison Personnelle 15 Year Wood Fired is the second kind — and it happens to taste extraordinary too.
This is a Grande Champagne Cognac distilled over open wood fire, aged between 15 and 19 years, and produced in a run of just 489 bottles total. Right now, only 178 of those bottles still exist. When they're gone, that's it.
Modern Cognac production runs almost entirely on steam-heated stills. Efficient, consistent, controllable. Wood-fired distillation in traditional Charentais pot stills is the older method — requiring constant attention, impossible to automate, and nearly extinct in the appellation. The difference isn't subtle. Open flame yields a spirit with pronounced fruit character, a textural depth, and a faint saline minerality that steam simply cannot replicate. You're tasting a production method that the industry largely walked away from decades ago.
Layer that on top of Grande Champagne terroir — the chalk-rich core of the Cognac appellation where Ugni Blanc ripens slowly and eaux-de-vie age with uncommon finesse — and you have a structural backbone that carries this spirit from first nose to finish. Extended aging in French Limousin oak has done its work without flattening anything. The edges are rounded. The character is fully intact.
Nose: Honeysuckle, vanilla-soaked oak, and hazelnut up front, evolving toward raisin and a quiet leather note as it opens in the glass.
Palate: Hazelnut and white stone fruit lead, followed by baking spice and a persistent, elegant finish that carries leather and oak through without any heat.
Color: Medium amber gilded with copper — exactly what nearly two decades in barrel looks like.
If you appreciate aged whiskey or fine mezcal for the craft behind the liquid — not just the flavor profile — this belongs in your hands. Cognac collectors, obviously. But also the whiskey drinker who hasn't explored serious brandy yet. This is a legitimate entry point and a ceiling piece at the same time. At $220 for something this rare and this well-made, it's not a casual purchase. It's a deliberate one.
Slow down. Tulip glass, a small pour, no rush. If you want a pairing, aged Comté is exceptional here — the nuttiness in the cheese mirrors the hazelnut on the palate in a way that feels intentional. Dark chocolate works too. Or pour it after dinner alongside a cigar and let it stand on its own. This is a spirit that rewards patience in the glass the same way patience in the barrel made it.
