2020 Rayas Domaine des Tours Reserve Rouge
$90.00
The 2020 Rayas Domaine des Tours Reserve Rouge is a Vacqueyras-area red from Emmanuel Reynaud, whose family has steered Château Rayas to legendary status in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This Reserve bottling anchors itself in old-vine Grenache harvested weeks later than the region's conventional producers, a late-harvest philosophy that prioritizes phenolic ripeness over early alcohol. The vines benefit from manual plowing and organic farming across forty hectares of limestone and clay soils purchased in 1935, a few kilometers north of Sarrians where the estate's tall towers stand. Emmanuel Reynaud took over from his father Bernard in 1989 and has maintained the family's commitment to Grenache-centered viticulture without synthetic intervention. The vineyards are worked entirely by hand, allowing the old vines to draw deeply from soils that typify this corner of the southern Rhône. Extended hang time means the fruit reaches full maturity without overextraction, a signature of the Reynaud approach that translates into wines with structure and longevity rather than immediate opulence. The estate sits within the gravitational pull of the Rayas winemaking tradition, where patience in the vineyard and restraint in the cellar define the house style. The 2020 vintage brings dark cherry, blackberry, and dried garrigue herb, with a savory undertow of olive tapenade and cracked pepper. The tannins have grip but remain fine-grained, and the wine's acidity keeps the palate lifted despite the southern warmth of the vintage. Pair it with braised lamb shoulder, grilled Merguez sausage, or a slow-cooked ratatouille. This is a wine for the table, built to frame richly spiced or fatty dishes rather than stand alone.
