Domaine Charles Audoin, based in Marsannay, was instrumental in putting the appellation on the map, championing it as a terroir worthy of serious recognition long before Marsannay was even granted its own AOC in 1987. Founded by Charles Audoin in the 1970s and now run by his son Cyril, representing the fourth and fifth generations of the family's winemaking, the estate has become a genuine standard-bearer for the region, farming entirely organically (certified since 2018, with biodynamic certification on the way starting in 2027). This Bourgogne Rouge is effectively a declassified Marsannay: 100% Pinot Noir sourced largely from old vines, around 40-50+ years old, planted within the Marsannay appellation itself but bottled under the broader regional designation, often because the fruit comes from younger vines or barrels that don't fit into the estate's single-vineyard cuvées. In the cellar, the grapes are fully destemmed, given gentle extraction over roughly two weeks of maceration, and aged about a year in mostly used oak barrels, with only minimal new wood, before bottling unfined and unfiltered, an approach built to let the fruit's natural expression lead. The result consistently punches well above its regional classification. Expect vivid sour cherry aromas leaping from the glass, sleek, juicy, and joyful on a barely medium-bodied palate, with a touch of darkness and depth adding real character to an otherwise bright, elegant finish. It's well-structured and characterful enough to be genuinely reminiscent of wines from more prestigious appellations, no need to decant, though it benefits from opening about thirty minutes before serving, and it drinks beautifully now while also having the structure to cellar for up to 15 years. A fantastic entry point into serious Marsannay character at true regional-Burgundy pricing, and a great example of how much quality can hide behind a modest Bourgogne AOC label when the producer's overall terroir and technique are this dialed in.
