2023 Julien Cecillon Vin de France Syrah Les Graviers
$25.00
Julien Cecillon's 2023 Vin de France Syrah Les Graviers is a cellar-door style northern Rhône Syrah that sidesteps appellation constraints to deliver pure drinkability. Cecillon sources 100% Syrah fruit from three distinct vineyard parcels across the Rhône Valley—often younger vines or sites just outside Saint-Joseph AOC boundaries—blending them into a fresh, juicy expression that carries the pedigree of his appellation work without the regulatory baggage. This is Syrah stripped of pretense, built for the table rather than the cellar, and punching well above its Vin de France classification. Julien Cecillon farms organically on the steep terraced vineyards of Saint-Joseph, working schist and granite soils that define the region's mineral backbone. For Les Graviers, he pulls fruit from parcels that wouldn't qualify for AOC bottlings due to vine age or boundary lines, but the farming and winemaking remain identical to his appellation wines. Fermentation is natural with indigenous yeasts, élevage is brief and gentle in older wood to preserve freshness, and the wine sees minimal sulfur at bottling. The result is a transparent snapshot of northern Rhône Syrah in its most unadorned form, a wine that prioritizes texture and drinkability over extraction or oak. The 2023 vintage opens with bright blackberry and plum, layered with cracked pepper, savory herbs, and a whisper of olive brine. Tannins are fine and approachable, acidity is lifted, and the finish carries a juicy, peppery snap that keeps the wine lively through the last sip. Serve this slightly chilled—around 55 degrees—with grilled lamb chops, margherita pizza, or roasted chicken with herbs. It's the kind of wine that works as well on a Tuesday with takeout as it does at a weekend cookout, and the medium body means it won't tire your palate over a second glass.
