Barbara Öhlzelt Grüner Veltliner "Grüner Leader" (1L)

$25.00
Barbara Öhlzelt farms six hectares in Zöbing, in Austria's Kamptal region, and has quietly become one of the most compelling new voices in Grüner Veltliner. Rather than chasing the powerful, unctuous style favored by many of the region's famous large estates, her wines turn that paradigm on its head, favoring focus, precision, and a quiet, simmering intensity instead. Fine, clearly delineated, and racy, they carry just as much depth and persistence as the bigger names, but on a lighter, more energetic frame. Grüner Leader is Öhlzelt's liter-format introduction to the estate, a blend drawn from across all of her Grüner Veltliner vineyards, with an average vine age of 30 years. The fruit is sourced from a genuinely impressive mix of terroirs, including parcels within the celebrated 1er Cru Heiligenstein vineyard (sandstone), along with Seeburg (slate, sand, clay) and Kogelberg (granite, shale), giving this "everyday" bottling real pedigree beneath its casual liter packaging. In the glass, expect a bright, citrus-driven nose of lemon and lime zest and pith, green apple, and white pepper, layered with floral undertones and a distinctly mineral, shell-like character. The palate is racy and vibrant, carrying mouth-watering acidity, a snappy, refreshing energy, and a clean mineral finish, restrained in alcohol and utterly food-friendly. It's been known to fool blind tasters into guessing Chablis, a testament to just how much precision and tension this style of Grüner Veltliner can achieve. Crunchy, endlessly drinkable, and perfectly sized for a gathering, it's a natural match for asparagus, seafood, salads, light pastas, Asian cuisine, or simply a sunny afternoon with friends, a genuinely exciting, under-the-radar expression of everything great Kamptal Grüner Veltliner can be.
