Beckmen Vineyards built its reputation in the Santa Ynez Valley on biodynamic farming long before it was a marketing buzzword, and the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is a solid example of why that commitment matters. Steve Beckmen has spent two decades converting the family's Purisima Mountain and Cuvee properties to biodynamic practices, working with the particular limestone-rich soils of Ballard Canyon and the surrounding valley to coax Bordeaux varieties out of a region better known for Rhone grapes. That contrarian streak is part of what makes this bottling worth seeking out — it's Cabernet from a place most people associate with Syrah and Grenache. 2022 was a warm, relatively dry growing season up and down California's Central Coast, and it shows here in a wine that's generous without tipping into jammy. Expect dark currant and blackberry fruit layered with dried herb, graphite, and a touch of cedar from careful oak aging. The tannins are structured but not aggressive, with enough acidity underneath to keep things lifted rather than heavy — a function of the valley's cooling maritime influence, which pulls fog in off the Pacific even during the hottest stretches of summer. This is a Cabernet built for the table. Pour it with a grilled ribeye or lamb chops, but it's equally at home next to mushroom risotto, aged gouda, or a weeknight bolognese if you want to dress things up without much effort. Give it a decant if you're opening it young — thirty minutes will soften the edges and let the fruit open up. For Cabernet drinkers who've worked through the usual Napa and Sonoma bottlings and want to see what else California can do with the grape, this is a smart detour. We've got it in stock at Off Premise, and it's a bottle that rewards a little patience in the glass.
