Bodegas Ondarre Rioja Reserva 750ml
$28.00
This 2018 Rioja Reserva spent at least three years aging before release — a minimum of one year in oak barrel and the rest in bottle, per Rioja Reserva regulations — and 2018 gave the region a cooler, wetter growing season than the previous few vintages, which tends to favor wines with brighter acidity and a touch more restraint than the riper, sun-baked years Rioja is sometimes known for. That balance shows here: this is a Tempranillo-driven wine (as nearly all Reserva-level Rioja is) built on the traditional American and French oak aging that gives the category its signature vanilla, dill, and coconut-tinged edges layered over red fruit. Expect a core of dried cherry and plum, with notes of leather, tobacco, and baking spice that come from the extended oak and bottle aging. Tannins should be fully resolved and silky by now — Reserva wines are made to drink on release, not cellar for another decade — and the finish tends to run long and savory rather than fruit-forward. If you've had Rioja before, this sits in the classic register: structured, earthy, a little rustic in the best sense, built for food rather than sipping alone. That's really where this wine earns its keep. Rioja Reserva is one of the most food-friendly styles on the shelf — it cuts through lamb chops or a grilled ribeye, but it's just as comfortable next to roasted mushrooms, aged manchego, or a plate of jamón. If you're doing a Sunday braise or a cheese board with something funky and aged, 2018 Rioja is the bottle that won't get overwhelmed or overwhelm in return. We've got this one in stock at Off Premise, and it's a good one to grab if you're looking to understand what traditional Rioja aging actually tastes like — oak-forward but not oaky, structured but not stiff, and genuinely built for the table.
