Bruna Grimaldi Camilla Barolo DOCG
$65.00
Bruna Grimaldi Camilla Barolo DOCG is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo from the Badarina cru in Grinzane Cavour, one of the eleven communes authorized to produce Barolo in Italy's Piedmont region. The Grimaldi family has farmed these calcareous marl slopes since the 1930s, and this bottling—named for founder Bruna's granddaughter—captures the taut structure and floral lift that define Nebbiolo grown at altitude in the Langhe hills southeast of Alba. The 2019 vintage spent three years in large Slavonian oak botti before release, the minimum aging required under DOCG regulations, and the wine reflects both the discipline of the appellation and the precision of a family that picks and ferments each parcel separately. Bruna Grimaldi farms fifteen hectares across Grinzane Cavour and Roddi, working primarily with Nebbiolo and Dolcetto in soils that shift from Sant'Agata marl to sandier Lequio formation as you move down-slope. The Camilla bottling draws fruit from the Badarina vineyard, a southeast-facing site where diurnal temperature swings preserve acidity even in warm years. After hand-harvest, the grapes undergo a long maceration—twenty to thirty days—in stainless steel before aging in neutral 2,500-liter casks that allow the wine to soften without picking up new oak character. The result is a Barolo that honors traditional methods while remaining approachable earlier than the region's more austere examples from higher-elevation crus like Monforte or Serralunga. The wine shows crushed red berries, walnut skin, and dark chocolate on the nose, followed by a medium-to-full body with round, juicy tannins that coat the palate without gripping too hard. A thread of bitter citrus peel—classic Nebbiolo—appears on the finish, cutting through the fruit and adding length. This is a Barolo for braised short ribs, roasted porcini, or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, and it will continue to develop in the bottle for another decade if you can resist opening it. Decant for an hour if drinking now; the wine rewards patience and air. Available for pickup at our Lincoln Park bottle shop at 1128 W Armitage Ave, local Chicago delivery, or nationwide shipping.
