Champagne Pertois-Moriset Special Club 750ml
$140.00
The 2017 Champagne Pertois-Moriset Special Club comes from one of the Côte des Blancs' most quietly respected grower-producer families, working out of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger since the 1950s. Pertois-Moriset farms its own vines across Mesnil and Cramant, two of the grand cru villages that chardonnay growers everywhere else try to imitate, and bottles only its best vintage fruit under the Special Club label — a designation shared by a small collective of grower-Champagnes who agree to a uniform bottle shape and a shared commitment to showing vintage character over house style. 2017 was a generous growing season in the Côte des Blancs, with a mild winter, some frost pressure in April that growers had to manage carefully, and a dry, sunny summer that pushed ripeness without sacrificing the acid backbone chardonnay needs. The result here is a Champagne that's racy and precise but not austere — chalky minerality up front, giving way to orchard fruit (white peach, green apple), a touch of brioche from extended lees aging, and a saline finish that's a dead giveaway for Mesnil fruit. It's got more weight and generosity than you'd expect from a blanc de blancs this structured, which is very much a 2017 signature. Drink this with things that want a Champagne that can actually stand up to them: roasted chicken with lemon and thyme, a wedge of aged Comté, raw oysters if you want the classic pairing, or just on its own at the start of a dinner party where you want people to stop talking for a second and pay attention to what's in the glass. This isn't a bottle you'll find on every shelf — production is limited and most of it stays close to home in France. We've got a small allocation at Off Premise, and it's worth grabbing now if you're the type who likes grower Champagne that tastes like a place and a vintage rather than a brand.
