Cinco Sentidos 'Maestro y Aprendiz' Arroqueno con Sierra Negra, Reynaldo Alejandro (104 proof) 750ml

Cinco Sentidos built its reputation on radical transparency — every bottle names the mezcalero, the village, the agave, and the still that made it, instead of hiding behind a brand name. This one is special even by that standard: "Maestro y Aprendiz" is Jason Cox's way of putting a teacher and a student on the same label, literally pairing a batch that captures how mezcal knowledge moves from one generation to the next in Oaxaca. Here the hands belong to Reynaldo Alejandro, working with two semi-wild agave species — Arroqueño and Sierra Negra — distilled together rather than kept separate, which is its own small act of technical confidence. Both varieties take years longer to mature than espadín and are harder to source consistently, so a co-ferment like this only happens when a palenquero has real command of his material. At 104 proof (52% ABV), this is bottled with very little dilution, which means you're tasting the distillate close to how it came off the still. Expect a thick, earthy core — cooked agave, wet stone, and green herbs up front, with the Sierra Negra pushing in black pepper and a faint smokiness that builds rather than announces itself. The finish runs long and warming, with a vegetal, almost savory edge that lingers well past the sip. This is not a mezcal built for mixing; it rewards a snifter, slow sips, and attention. Pour it alongside something equally assertive — mole negro, charred octopus, a plate of grilled lamb, or just dark chocol
