Raphael Saint Cyr, fourth-generation vigneron at Domaine de Bellevue in Anse, farms twenty-three hectares organically across the region's southern edge and northern crus, making this straight Beaujolais cuvée the most accessible expression of his approach. The name La Galoche refers to a traditional wooden clog worn by vineyard workers in the region, a nod to the hands-on farming that defines the estate. Raphael took over winemaking in 2008, converting the entire domaine to certified organic viticulture and shifting focus from generic Beaujolais parcels near the winery to single-vineyard sites in Morgon, Regnié, Chénas, and Moulin-à-Vent further north. La Galoche comes from the southern Beaujolais vineyards that remained after this restructuring, planted to Gamay on the granite and clay soils typical of Anse. The grapes ferment in concrete tanks with natural yeasts, then age for six months in the same vessels before bottling, a lighter touch than the twelve-to-eighteen-month used-barrel program Saint Cyr reserves for his cru wines. The concrete preserves the bright fruit and mineral snap that make Beaujolais approachable young, without the tannin or oak weight that can obscure the grape. The wine tastes like red cherry, cranberry, and wet stone, with a floral lift and a clean, snappy finish. It drinks slightly chilled, the way Gamay should, and pairs well with charcuterie, roast chicken, or a simple mushroom tart.
