Fattoria Montellori Chianti
$22.00
Fattoria Montellori Chianti is a traditional Tuscan red from the rolling hills west of Florence, where the Nieri family has grown Sangiovese since the estate's founding in 1895. This is textbook Chianti: a Sangiovese-dominant blend fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged briefly in large Slavonian oak botti, yielding a wine with deep purple color and the violet-and-morello-cherry aromatics that define the appellation. The 2022 growing season delivered concentrated fruit without overripeness, and the Montellori bottling captures that balance. The Fattoria Montellori estate sits in the Montalbano subzone of Chianti, where clay-limestone soils and diurnal temperature swings preserve acidity in Sangiovese. The Nieri family farms approximately thirty hectares of vines, supplementing estate Sangiovese with small percentages of Canaiolo and Colorino in the traditional Chianti formula. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, and the wine sees six months in large Slavonian oak casks that allow the fruit to breathe without imparting heavy wood character. The result is a wine that foregrounds terroir and varietal expression rather than cellar intervention. The palate is extremely full-bodied for Chianti, with red cherry and plum fruit layered over firm tannins and bright acidity. Violet and dried herbs linger on the finish, and the structure supports rich foods without overwhelming simpler preparations. Open this with osso buco, wild boar ragu over pappardelle, or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano and salumi. The wine drinks well on release but will hold in a cool cellar for three to five years as the tannins integrate.
