The recipe traces back to J.W. Kelly's original 1866 expression, reborn in 2016 as a tribute to the founder's Deep Spring Distillery in Chattanooga. J.W. Kelly established Deep Spring Distillery in Chattanooga in 1866 with the goal of producing the finest whiskey in the city, and his rye recipe was the distillery's first expression. The brand was revived in 2016 to honor that lineage, with Golden Age specifically formulated to replicate the original rye rather than chase the dry, spicy profile that defines most contemporary American ryes. The high malted-rye and malted-barley percentages — 35% of the mash bill combined — contribute sweetness and body upfront, a deliberate counterpoint to the sharper, grain-forward character of MGP and similar distillates. The whiskey is aged in superior oak for at least two years before bottling at 94 proof. On the nose, sweet orchard fruits like apple and pear sit alongside classic rye spice and a faint floral note from the malted rye.
