Kyrö Peat Smoke Rye Whisky is a Finnish single malt made from 100% whole-grain rye and smoked with alder wood rather than the Scottish peat typically associated with smoky whiskies. Where most peated expressions rely on barley and Highland peat, Kyrö leans into Finland's own terroir—rye from local farms and alder, a tree native to the wetlands of western Finland. The result is a rye whisky with a vegetal, almost herbal smoke profile distinct from Islay's iodine-heavy character. Kyrö Distillery Company operates in Isokyrö, a farming village in western Finland, and was founded by a group of friends determined to build a rye whisky tradition from scratch. Finnish rye is harvested in short northern summers, milled whole to preserve oils and texture, and fermented in open vessels before distillation in traditional pot stills. The alder smoke is applied during the malting process, infusing the grain with a softer, earthier smoke than peat delivers—closer to campfire than coastal brine. The spirit is aged in new American oak and European ex-wine casks, balancing the smoke with vanilla and dried fruit. On the palate, Peat Smoke leads with toasted rye bread, black pepper, and a gentle alder smokiness that builds through the mid-palate without overwhelming the grain's natural spice.
