Michele Satta Bolgheri Rosso

$40.00
Michele Satta is one of the founding voices of Bolgheri, having planted roots along the Tuscan coast before the region became the celebrated appellation it is today. This Bolgheri Rosso is his entry point — a blend built around Sangiovese with support from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah — and it punches well above its category. The wine captures the distinctive character of coastal Tuscany: ripe and generous, with enough structure and freshness to keep it from feeling heavy or overblown. Michele Satta arrived in Bolgheri in the 1970s, when the area was still largely undiscovered, and began planting vines on the sandy, well-drained soils that define the appellation's maritime character. The Bolgheri Rosso draws from estate vineyards a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the cooling influence of the coast tempers the Mediterranean sun and helps the fruit retain acidity. Satta blends Sangiovese — Tuscany's native backbone — with international varieties that thrive in Bolgheri's warm, breezy conditions, fermenting in stainless steel and aging the wine in a combination of French oak and neutral vessels to add structure without overwhelming the fruit. The oak is present but restrained, offering a touch of spice and roundness while letting the wine's coastal character come through. Expect dark cherry, blackberry, and a hint of Mediterranean scrub — that wild, sun-warmed herb quality that runs through so much of this coastal territory. The fruit is ripe but not jammy, and the tannins have enough grip to stand up to grilled meats, pasta with ragù, or a simple roast chicken with rosemary. What makes the Michele Satta Bolgheri Rosso worth reaching for is its balance. Bolgheri at this price point can easily tip into overripe or over-extracted territory, but Satta's experience and restraint show in the glass. It drinks beautifully on release with a little air, and has enough depth to reward short-term cellaring as well — an ideal introduction to the appellation or a reliable bottle for the table when you want something crowd-pleasing without sacrificing character.
