Pellet Estate Sunchase Vineyard Chardonnay
$50.00
Pellet Estate's Sunchase Vineyard Chardonnay is grown inside the Petaluma Gap, an AVA that earned federal recognition in 2017 for one reason: the wind and fog regime is consistent enough to predictably shape flavor. The vineyard sits directly in the path of Pacific air that funnels through the coastal range break, and that maritime influence—constant, not seasonal—defines the wine's structure. This is full-bodied Chardonnay built on bright acidity, the organizing tension that keeps its weight honest and its tropical fruit in check. Pellet Estate farms a mosaic of vineyard sites across Sonoma County, and Sunchase occupies the precise zone where cooling air from the gap lengthens hang time without stalling ripeness. The winemaking leans into texture: barrel fermentation and extended lees aging build a creamy, almond-like mouthfeel, while the site's natural acidity cuts through the oak treatment and holds the wine taut. The golden color signals time on lees and careful oxidative handling, techniques that add depth without burying the fruit. The Petaluma Gap's defining feature is the interplay between daytime warmth and nighttime maritime cold, and that push-pull shows up in the glass as ripe tropical fruit bracketed by green-apple tartness. The nose delivers pear, pineapple, apple blossom, honey, and caramel, and the palate follows with mango, honeydew, nectarine, and a savory undercurrent of Gravenstein apple and cut hay. The texture is silky, almost viscous, but the acidity gives it architecture rather than just weight. The finish carries oak spice and vanilla, tempered by that persistent almond creaminess. Pair it with roast chicken, grilled halibut, or anything finished with brown butter—the wine has the structure to stand up to fat and the acidity to cut through it. The winemaker flags a decade of aging potential, and the backbone supports that claim. In stock at Off Premise in Lincoln Park.
