Roterfaden & Rosswag Co-Op "Terraces" Red

$24.00
This wine is a genuinely unique collaboration between the small, forward-thinking estate Weingut Roterfaden, run by Hannes Hoffmann (born in Rosswag) and his wife Olympia Samara, and the local Rosswag cooperative, which farms 99% of the vineyards surrounding this tiny Swabian village about 30 minutes north of Stuttgart, in Germany's Württemberg region. Rosswag and its neighboring village Mülhausen sit within an ancient amphitheater of towering, hand-terraced vineyards over 1,000 years old, spanning some 23.61 miles of hand-built stone walls, now protected as an official nature preserve. Farming here is extraordinarily labor-intensive, virtually everything must be done by hand on these steep, blue-shell-limestone slopes, and as younger generations increasingly leave for cities, Roterfaden and the local co-op have partnered to help chart a more sustainable, organic and biodynamic path forward for the region's viticultural heritage. The wine is a blend of four native and hybrid German red grapes, roughly 55% Lemberger (Blaufränkisch), 25% Trollinger, 10% Regent, and 10% Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier), all grown on those ancient terraced limestone slopes. Vinified in stainless steel only, the winemaking emphasis is squarely on energy, purity, and vitality rather than depth or heavy structure. Expect a bright ruby color and a nose of wild red berries, dried herbs, and earthy spice, with the palate carrying tart cherry, cranberry, dried strawberry, and blueberry alongside black pepper, cedar, leather, and stony, savory earth. Light to medium-bodied with soft, approachable tannins and lively, refreshing acidity, it's a wine built for immediate, energetic drinking rather than long cellaring. A rare, small-production discovery (just 10,000 bottles annually) from one of Germany's most overlooked red wine regions, it pairs beautifully with duck, mushrooms, or a charcuterie spread, and offers a genuinely compelling look at what thoughtful, hands-on collaboration between grower and producer can achieve, even from cooperative fruit.
