Tequila Ocho Teq Ex Anejo 80 750ML
$275.00
Tequila Ocho built its reputation on doing the opposite of what big tequila does: single-estate harvests, vintage-dated releases, and a refusal to blend agave from multiple ranchos. The Extra Añejo 80 pushes that philosophy to its logical extreme, aging well past the three-year minimum required for the category. Founded by Carlos Camarena, one of the most respected master distillers in Jalisco, and the late Tomas Estes, Ocho sources exclusively from the Camarena family's own fields in Los Altos, naming each bottling after the specific rancho that grew the agave that year. That estate-driven, terroir-first approach is rare in tequila, where most brands buy agave on the open market from whoever has supply. Ocho treats agave more like a winemaker treats grapes, which is exactly why the Extra Añejo category suits them so well — extended barrel time doesn't erase the agave character here, it layers onto it. Expect a tequila that drinks closer to a fine añejo brandy than anything resembling a mixto. Long maturation in oak brings deep caramel, dried fruit, toasted vanilla, and baking spice, while the cooked agave still comes through underneath with that classic Los Altos sweetness. The finish is long, warm, and rounded, with a faint smokiness from the barrels rather than the still. This is a sipping tequila, full stop. Pour it neat in a Glencairn or snifter the way you would a rested rum or a good cognac. It holds its own after dinner alongside dark chocolate, roasted nuts, or a short list of dried figs and aged manchego. Skip the lime and salt here — there's too much going on in the glass to mask. We don't see a ton of true Extra Añejo tequila move through the shop, and Ocho's version is one we're always glad to have back in stock at Off Premise. If you've worked through their Blanco or Añejo and want to see what Camarena does with real patience, this is the bottle to chase down.
