The 2011 Chateau Sigalas Rabaud is a Premier Cru Classé Sauternes with a decade of bottle age, the threshold at which botrytized dessert wines begin to reveal secondary aromatics and settle into their structural balance. The estate's twenty-one hectares lie in Bommes, the warmest and highest-elevation commune in Sauternes, where morning mists from the Ciron River create ideal conditions for Botrytis cinerea to concentrate sugars without stripping acidity. This vintage comes from a warm year in Bordeaux that yielded wines with ripe fruit expression and the firm backbone necessary to anchor honeyed sweetness and evolve in the cellar. Chateau Sigalas Rabaud has been farmed by the Cordier family since 1930, working old-vine Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc planted on gravelly clay soils. Harvest is conducted in multiple passes through the vineyard, selecting only those bunches where noble rot has shriveled the berries to raisin-like concentration. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, and the wine ages for eighteen months in wood, building texture while preserving the bright acidity that prevents Sauternes from turning cloying. The production method is patient and labor-intensive, typical of the region's top classified estates, where concentration is achieved in the vineyard rather than through manipulation in the cellar. The wine opens with layers of wildflower honey, textured and sweet but laced with dry spice that keeps the palate engaged. Pineapple and ripe apple flavors ride on a core that is firm and dry, balanced by acidity that cuts through the richness. This is a complex, structured Sauternes with the inner architecture to continue evolving for another decade.
