2016 Weingut Reinhold Haart Piesporter Spätlese

Few estates in the Mosel carry the authority of Reinhold Haart. Based in Piesport, the family has cultivated the village's vineyards for generations, and Theo Haart is widely regarded as one of the region's most gifted winemakers, producing Rieslings of exceptional precision and depth. Piesport's steep, south-facing slopes of ancient Devon slate are among the Mosel's most prized sites, retaining heat through cool nights and imparting the stony, mineral character that sets the village's wines apart. 2016 was a benchmark vintage on the Mosel, a long, cool growing season culminating in a warm, dry autumn that allowed grapes to ripen gradually and develop both concentration and freshness in equal measure. Haart's village Spätlese from this year shows the vintage's generosity clearly: ripe peach, nectarine, and yellow plum on the palate, lifted by floral notes and a bright citrus edge, with the slate minerality running through to a clean, lingering finish. The residual sweetness is kept in elegant check by the wine's lively acidity, giving it the classic Mosel tension that makes Spätlese such a compelling style. Drinking beautifully now, with plenty of life still ahead. Serve well chilled with spiced dishes, cured fish, soft cheese, or simply on its own.
