2020 La Rioja Alta Vina Alberdi Reserva Rioja 750ml
$35.00
The 2020 La Rioja Alta Viña Alberdi Reserva is the entry point into one of Rioja's most traditionalist and respected houses, and it overdelivers at every price check. La Rioja Alta has been making wine in Haro's Estación quarter since 1890, and they've never chased trends — American oak aging, extended barrel time, and a refusal to release wines before they're ready are still house policy. Alberdi is their "junior" Reserva, but that's relative; this is a wine built with the same patience as its pricier siblings, just with a shorter aging arc. 2020 was a balanced growing season in Rioja Alta, with enough warmth to ripen the fruit fully but no heat spikes to blow out the acidity, and that tension shows in the glass. Made primarily from Tempranillo grown in the cooler, higher-elevation Rioja Alta subzone, this Reserva spends around three years between American oak barrels and bottle before release, which is longer than most producers give their Reservas and part of why La Rioja Alta's wines drink so well early while still having room to age. Expect the classic Alberdi profile: red cherry and dried strawberry up front, giving way to dill, vanilla, leather, and a faint tobacco note from the American oak. The palate is medium-bodied with bright acidity and fine, resolved tannins — this isn't a wine that needs to be cellared to be enjoyable, though it will hold for several more years without complaint. It's savory more than fruity, with a long, slightly dusty finish. Pour it with roasted lamb, grilled chorizo, aged manchego, or a simple dish of patatas bravas if you're keeping things casual. It's also a genuinely good wine to drink on its own while you're figuring out what to eat. We keep the Alberdi in stock at Off Premise because it's the kind of bottle that overperforms its price point and reminds people why traditional Rioja earned its reputation in the first place.
