2021 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes

$118.00
Domaine Lignier-Michelot's 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes is a village-level red Burgundy built from vines that deliver grand cru intensity. The wine is sourced from 1.2 hectares across three old-vine parcels in Morey-Saint-Denis — Chenevery, Cognées, and Très Girard — where plants between 60 and 70 years old naturally produce a high percentage of millerandage, the small, thick-skinned berries that concentrate flavor and complexity beyond what the appellation alone would suggest. Virgile Lignier vinifies the 2021 vintage with eighty percent whole-cluster fermentation and ages the wine in mostly seasoned oak, a strategy that keeps the fruit and underlying terroir in sharp focus while building structure that will reward patient cellaring. The Lignier family has cultivated vines in Morey-Saint-Denis for generations, and under the direction of Virgile and Laure Lignier the domaine has emerged as one of the most consistently excellent producers in the Côte de Nuits. Virgile converted the estate's 10.5 hectares to fully organic farming and constructed a new temperature-controlled winery in 2013, giving him the precision to extract tannin gently and preserve the energy in each vintage. His approach to whole-bunch fermentation — adjusted year to year based on stem ripeness — and his restrained use of new oak result in wines that show remarkable perfume and silky texture even in youth, with the underlying structure to develop gracefully over a decade or more. The 2021 vintage opens with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry, lifted by violet and rose petal, then reveals a subtle earthiness of forest floor and fallen leaves as the wine breathes. Darker notes follow — black fruit, cocoa, pipe tobacco, and a thread of iron-rich minerality that speaks to the limestone bedrock beneath Morey-Saint-Denis. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied with supple, finely grained tannins, a juicy core of harmonious fruit, and a long, precise finish edged with just enough grip to signal years of evolution ahead. The whole-cluster integration is seamless, the overall impression one of real depth and elegance. This is a wine to serve slightly cool alongside roasted duck breast, grilled lamb chops, or a mushroom and truffle risotto, and it will reward those who cellar it through 2030 and beyond.
