2022 Dugat-Py Beaune "Les Beaux Fougets" Très Vieilles Vignes

Wow. Wow. Wow. Is this a powerful wine. Once known for producing monolithic reds that demanded decades of patience, Dugat-Py is writing a bold new chapter under the thoughtful hand of Loïc Dugat, the 13th generation vigneron. This 2022 Beaune "Les Beaux Fougets" TVV shows just how far the estate has evolved—still intense and structured, but now lifted, energetic, and more approachable in youth. Loïc has softened the once-imposing style by embracing earlier picking, reduced new oak, and increased whole-cluster fermentation (now at 50%). The result is a wine that’s still a monument to Burgundy terroir—but one that speaks with nuance and finesse rather than brute force. From organically and biodynamically farmed vines planted between 1965 and 1985, this Pinot Noir opens with a soaring nose of baked raspberries, red cherry, and dried cranberry, underlined by notes of loamy earth, spice, and rose petal. The palate is surprisingly supple, thanks to fine furry tannins, vibrant acidity, and a gentle curve of fruit and savory depth. You’ll also find hints of pipe tobacco, black tea, clove, and mint, wrapped in a savory, saline edge that adds definition to the long finish. While this wine is already expressive, decanting is essential to reveal its full aromatic range. And make no mistake—this is a wine built to age, with all the inner tension and raw material to go the distance. Crafted in one of Burgundy’s oldest cellars (11th century!), the legacy of Dugat-Py runs deep—but with Loïc at the helm, it’s entering a dynamic new era of precision, transparency, and respect for terroir. "Les Beaux Fougets" is proof: power and purity can coexist.
