E. Pira & Figli Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC 2022
$58.00
Crafted by Chiara Boschis, the only woman among the legendary "Barolo Boys" who helped revolutionize Piedmont winemaking with shorter macerations and earlier-drinking styles, this Barbera comes from the organic Mosconi and Ravera vineyards in Monforte d'Alba and the Gabutti vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, planted on clay-limestone marl soils around 350 meters elevation. The wine ferments and macerates in stainless steel before aging in second and third-passage French oak barriques, earning it the "Superiore" designation. In the glass, it shows an intense ruby red with violet reflections and a nose of red fruit with a hint of spice, often described as a pretty, floral perfume of violets, fresh blackberries, and sweet herbs. On the palate, crushed cassis and wild blackberry sit over a stony base, with tart, bright blackcurrant acidity carrying through to a lingering, perfumed violet finish. The tannins are long and fine, and despite a robust 14.5% alcohol, the wine retains surprising freshness.
