2024 Arancino Organic Sicilia DOC

$25.00
The 2024 Arancino Organic Sicilia DOC is a single-varietal Catarratto from a woman-led Sicilian winery that's been farming organically and biodynamically certified since its founding, treating the island's workhorse white grape with the kind of attention usually reserved for more glamorous varietals. Native yeast fermentation, no fining, no filtration—this is Catarratto allowed to express itself fully, with all the texture and aromatic complexity that minimal intervention preserves. Catarratto has spent decades as Sicily's production workhorse, the grape behind bulk wines and blending components, but conscientious growers have been proving its potential for character when farmed with care. This bottling comes from limestone-rich vineyards in western Sicily, close enough to the coast that the Mediterranean's influence shows up in both the vineyard's microclimate and the wine's flavor profile. The soils drain well and retain heat, pushing ripeness while the sea breeze tempers excessive weight. Indigenous yeasts from the vineyard conduct fermentation at their own pace, and the wine goes into bottle without manipulation, keeping everything the fruit and site have to offer. The 2024 vintage opens with mandarin and candied orange peel, backed by ripe peach that gives the wine some stone fruit weight rather than pure citrus brightness. Acacia flowers add floral lift, while an herbal thread of wild fennel and dried oregano runs through the palate and carries into the finish, where a subtle salinity—characteristic of vineyards this close to the sea—lingers. The mouthfeel has presence without heaviness, textured enough to hold up to food but still refreshing. Serve this cold, around 45 to 50 degrees, and let it warm slightly in the glass as the aromatics unfold. It's built for Sicilian food: grilled branzino, pasta con le sarde, marinated artichokes with shaved pecorino, anything involving anchovies, capers, or briny olives. The wine is vegan-friendly for those tracking production methods, and it's ready to drink now.
