Bereche Brut Reserve NV
$110.00
Founded in 1847 in the village of Ludes on the northern Montagne de Reims, Bereche & Fils has emerged as one of the most compelling grower-producer stories in Champagne. Brothers Raphael and Vincent, now at the helm, have steadily refined an approach built on organic farming, minimal intervention, and a deep commitment to terroir. The Brut Reserve is their flagship non-vintage, and one of the most reliable and exciting entry-level Champagnes on the market. The blend draws fruit from across their 9 hectares in four villages, bringing together Pinot Noir from Ormes, Chardonnay from Ludes and Trepail, and Meunier from the western Vallee de la Marne. Around 30 to 40 percent of the blend comes from a perpetual reserve system, resting on lees and adding layers of complexity to each release. Base wines are aged 70 percent in cask and 30 percent in tank, with no malolactic fermentation, and the wine spends two years on lees before disgorgement at a low dosage of around 5 to 6 g/L. In the glass, the wine is precise and layered. Nectarine, orange zest, and brioche fill the nose, while the palate is medium to full bodied and focused, with considerable density underpinned by racy acidity and a chalky finish. The Brut Reserve has seen meaningful refinements in recent years, no longer incorporating tailles and now featuring Chardonnay from Trepail, resulting in lower pH and higher acidity. The result is a Champagne of genuine tension and finesse, one that rewards patience but drinks beautifully from release.
