J-M Sélèque Solessence Extra Brut
Champagne & Sparkling
$85.00
The flagship cuvée of Jean-Marc Sélèque, Solessence is a wine that embodies the philosophy of a passionate third-generation grower who returned to his family's domaine in 2008 and set about redefining what the Marne Valley could offer. Working largely alone across 45 parcels spread over seven villages, Jean-Marc farms organically with biodynamic practices, keeping yields low and allowing the land to speak with uncommon clarity. The blend is 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Meunier, and 10% Pinot Noir, drawn from all seven villages where the Sélèque family grows vines: Pierry, Moussy, Épernay, Mardeuil, Dizy, Boursault, and Vertus. Vines average 40 years of age, a figure that would constitute old vines at most Champagne estates. Half the blend is enriched by a perpetual reserve, lending depth and continuity across disgorgements. Vinification is predominantly in stainless steel with a portion aged in large oak barrels, with no fining or filtration, preserving the wine's natural vitality and terroir-driven character. On the nose, the wine is at once inviting and precise, offering white flowers, pear, crisp stone fruits, orange zest, and almond paste. The palate is medium to full-bodied with lively acidity, a pillowy mousse, and a signature chalky grip that speaks directly to the limestone and flinty clay soils beneath the vines. Citrus brightness mingles with hazelnut and a clean, saline wash on the long finish. With just 2 g/L dosage, Solessence is dry in the truest sense, letting the fruit and minerality carry the conversation from start to finish. It is a Champagne as much about place as it is about pleasure.
