Bosco del Merlo Turranio Sauvignon Blanc

$22.00
Bosco del Merlo, whose name references the oak forests that once covered the area, was founded in 1977 in Annone Veneto by Valentino Paladin, with the goal of crafting sustainable wines that best express the identity of the local terroir. Situated between the ancient Roman consular roads of Via Annia and Via Postumia, the estate expanded significantly in the 1990s with an additional 50 hectares acquired near Lison di Portogruaro, the historic cradle of viticulture in the region, bringing total holdings to around 100 hectares. Now run by third-generation family members Francesca and Martina Paladin, the estate is Equalitas certified, a rigorous 360-degree sustainability standard covering social, environmental, and economic practices. Turranio, the estate's flagship Sauvignon Blanc and a source of real pride for the winery, is 100% certified sustainable, sourced from a single vineyard where several distinct clones are harvested and vinified separately, an early-picked lot contributing freshness and minerality, a later-picked lot adding structure and body, before fermentation and five months of lees aging in stainless steel. It's a wine that's earned serious international recognition, including a Special Trophy at the 2011 Concours Mondial du Sauvignon and Gold Medals across multiple vintages, and it's found its way onto the wine lists of prestigious restaurants and hotels from Venice to Hong Kong. In the glass, expect a straw-yellow color with greenish reflections. The nose is aromatic and layered: citrus, white peach, passionfruit, melon, tomato leaf, sage, white wildflowers, and a distinctive flinty, mineral edge. The palate opens fresh and lively, aromatically intense through the mid-palate, and stretches toward a long, savory, persistent finish, more textured and structured than a typical cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc, appealing to fans of both French and New Zealand styles alike. It's a genuinely versatile food wine, excellent with herb-driven first courses like risotto or asparagus, shellfish, aged prosciutto, alpine cheeses, or vegetable-forward dishes built around fennel, tomato, or peppers, a serious, award-winning expression of Sauvignon Blanc from a corner of northeastern Italy too often overlooked in favor of its red wine reputation.
