Chartreuse Gentiane Apéritif

$55.00
Chartreuse Gentiane Apéritif is the lightest spirit the Carthusian monks of Aiguenoire have ever bottled, clocking in at 22.7% ABV — a dramatic departure from the legendary Green and Yellow Chartreuse that built the order's reputation. Built around wild gentian root harvested from the French Alps and lifted with citrus distillates, Gentiane is the bright, bittersweetoutlier in a family known for complexity and secrecy. It's more approachable, less enigmatic, but still carries the monks' fingerprints in every sip. The same Carthusian monks who have guarded the 130-herb Chartreuse recipe since 1737 crafted Gentiane as a sessionable aperitif rather than a contemplative digestif. Only two monks alive know the full formula for the flagship spirits, and while Gentiane is less guarded, it still draws on the order's deep knowledge of alpine botanicals. The gentian root — foraged from high-altitude meadows in the same region where the monastery sits in Aiguenoire — brings the signature bitter backbone, while citrus distillates add brightness and balance. The result is a spirit that feels like Chartreuse in a summer dress: earthy, grassy, and refreshing rather than dense and herbal. On the palate, expect gentle bitterness from the gentian, a grassy vegetal quality that echoes the alpine terroir, and a citrus lift that keeps it from tilting too earthy. The lower proof makes it dangerously easy to drink over ice with a splash of soda or a drizzle of cassis, and it shines in cocktails that call for a gentian-forward modifier — try it in place of Suze in a White Negroni, or alongside gin and blanc vermouth for a lower-proof aperitivo with complexity. Pour it before dinner with a bowl of citrus-marinated olives, or after a long day when you want something bitter and botanical without the full Chartreuse commitment.
