Built around wild gentian root harvested from the French Alps and lifted with citrus distillates, Gentiane is the bright, bittersweetoutlier in a family known for complexity and secrecy. It's more approachable, less enigmatic, but still carries the monks' fingerprints in every sip. The same Carthusian monks who have guarded the 130-herb Chartreuse recipe since 1737 crafted Gentiane as a sessionable aperitif rather than a contemplative digestif. Only two monks alive know the full formula for the flagship spirits, and while Gentiane is less guarded, it still draws on the order's deep knowledge of alpine botanicals. The gentian root — foraged from high-altitude meadows in the same region where the monastery sits in Aiguenoire — brings the signature bitter backbone, while citrus distillates add brightness and balance. The result is a spirit that feels like Chartreuse in a summer dress: earthy, grassy, and refreshing rather than dense and herbal.
