Chateau Haut Sarthes Rouge
$18.00
Chateau Haut Sarthes Rouge is a Merlot-dominated Bordeaux blend from the Bergerac region, planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc on the same clay-limestone soils that define St. Emilion just to the west. The terroir here mirrors the Right Bank's geological blueprint, delivering the plush fruitiness and structural backbone that make Merlot-based reds from this corner of southwest France a direct analog to their more famous neighbors at a fraction of the cost. This is classic Bordeaux method applied to vineyards where the Dordogne River moderates ripening and the plateau soils supply natural acidity and mineral tension. Chateau Haut Sarthes farms vineyards in the rolling hills east of St. Emilion, where the maritime influence of the Dordogne River tempers the continental climate and the clay-limestone plateau delivers the same grape clones and soil composition that power the Right Bank appellations. The Merlot leads the blend, contributing weight and dark fruit, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc add tannic structure and herbal lift. Vinification follows traditional Bordeaux protocol with fermentation in stainless steel and aging in neutral oak to preserve the fruit without layering on new-wood character. The estate's proximity to St. Emilion means the same winemaking logic at work, just without the appellation premium. The wine opens with black cherry, plum, and a hint of tobacco, the Merlot showing its lush side while the Cabernets frame the finish with graphite and dried herbs. It has enough structure to handle grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, or a cheese board heavy on aged Comté and Manchego, but the fruit-forward profile makes it approachable young without needing years in the cellar. Serve it slightly cool in summer or at cellar temperature in winter with anything that benefits from tannic grip and dark fruit concentration. The balance here is Right Bank in spirit, southwest France in price, and the clay-limestone soils do the work that oak and extraction try to mimic elsewhere. In stock at Off Premise in Lincoln Park.
