Chateau Haut Sarthes Rouge
$18.00
Chateau Haut Sarthes Rouge is a Merlot-dominated Bordeaux blend from vineyards planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc in the Bergerac region, just east of St. Emilion. The terroir here mirrors the limestone and clay soils that define the Right Bank, producing grapes with the same plush fruitiness and structural backbone that make St. Emilion a global benchmark for Merlot-based reds. This is a classic southwest France expression of Bordeaux varieties at a fraction of the appellation price. Chateau Haut Sarthes farms vineyards in the rolling hills of Bergerac, where the maritime influence of the Dordogne River moderates ripening and the clay-limestone plateau delivers natural acidity and minerality. The Merlot leads the blend, contributing weight and dark fruit, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc add tannic structure and herbal lift. Vinification follows traditional Bordeaux methods with fermentation in stainless steel and aging in neutral oak to preserve the fruit without overwhelming it with wood. The estate's proximity to St. Emilion means the same grape clones, the same soil types, and the same winemaking logic at work. The wine opens with black cherry, plum, and a hint of tobacco, the Merlot showing its lush side while the Cabernets frame the finish with graphite and dried herbs. It has enough structure to handle grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, or a cheese board heavy on aged Comté and Manchego, but the fruit-forward profile makes it approachable young. Serve it slightly cool in summer or at cellar temperature in winter with anything that benefits from a little tannic grip and a lot of dark fruit.
