Drappier "Carte d'Or" Brut Champagne
$62.00
Champagne Drappier has been directed by the same family since 1808, based in Urville, in the Côte des Bar, Champagne's southernmost district. Unusual among Champagne houses, Drappier is neither a Grande Marque nor a small grower, but sits in between, owning around 60 hectares while also sourcing fruit, making it both a domaine and négociant house. The family has also built a reputation as one of the region's most experimental producers, working with low or no dosage, pioneering "sans soufre" Champagne (a sensitivity to sulfur runs in the family), and farming organically, with Carte d'Or standing as the clearest expression of the house's identity, and famously the favorite Champagne of Charles de Gaulle, whose wife was a close friend of the Drappier family. Carte d'Or is built on a high proportion of Pinot Noir, roughly 80%, with 15% Chardonnay and a splash of Meunier rounding out the blend, sourced from Urville and the surrounding Côte des Bar. With that much Pinot Noir in the mix, Drappier describes it as "almost a Blanc de Noirs," giving the wine real weight and red fruit character rarely found in a house's standard non-vintage cuvée. Around 40% reserve wine is blended in for consistency and depth, and the wine is bottled with a moderate dosage (generally cited around 6.5-7 g/L). In the glass, expect a light golden color with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose shows real aromatic richness: stone fruit (white peach, pear), red berries, blossom honey, brioche, toasted bread, and a signature note of quince jelly that Drappier considers the cuvée's calling card, some tasters also find hints of orange peel, almond, and crushed stone. The palate is medium to full-bodied, broad and vinous, with a creamy texture, lively acidity, and real complexity for the price, spicy, structured, and long, closing dry and clean despite its generous, fruit-driven core. It's a versatile, food-friendly Champagne well suited to serving as an aperitif or alongside white meat, firm fish, or Chaource cheese, and it's widely regarded in the trade as one of the best value, most character-driven non-vintage Champagnes on the market today.
