Foursquare R.L. Seale's 12 Year Old Finest Rum

The name on the label is the one that started it all. Reginald Leon Seale founded R.L. Seale & Co. in 1926, building a business around sourcing, blending, and bottling Barbadian rum at a time when the island's distilling tradition was at its most vibrant. Four generations later, his great-grandson Richard Seale has taken that legacy and redefined it entirely, reopening the Foursquare Distillery in 1996 and establishing himself as one of the most principled and respected voices in the global rum world. The R.L. Seale's 12 Year is both a tribute to that founding generation and a clear statement of the distillery's current philosophy: no added sugar, no colorants, no shortcuts. The rum is a single blended expression combining distillates from Foursquare's copper double-retort pot still and its continuous twin-column Coffey still. The molasses is close-top fermented for nearly 100 hours before distillation, and the resulting spirit is aged for a minimum of 12 years entirely on-site in Barbados in ex-bourbon barrels. Tropical aging at this length is the equivalent of considerably more time in a cooler climate, producing a depth and integration of character that the age statement alone does not fully convey. Bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration or additives. The nose is inviting and warmly tropical: toasted coconut, nutmeg, caramel, treacle, and vanilla, with baking spice running underneath and a cooked banana note that is unmistakably Barbadian in character. On the palate it opens with rich caramel and honeyed banana chips before expanding into papaya, toasted hazelnut, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and brown sugar. The finish is long and gently dry, with smoky oak tannins, graphite, and lingering baking spice fading slowly and cleanly. This is Foursquare's everyday benchmark and one of the great values in aged rum. Sip it neat, use it as the backbone of an Old Fashioned, or build it into a tiki cocktail that deserves a serious foundation.
