Foursquare R.L. Seale's 12 Year Old Finest Rum

$60.00
Foursquare R.L. Seale's 12 Year Old Finest Rum is a single blended expression combining distillates from the distillery's copper double-retort pot still and its continuous twin-column Coffey still, aged for a minimum of 12 years entirely in Barbados in ex-bourbon barrels. Named for Reginald Leon Seale, who founded R.L. Seale & Co. in 1926, this rum carries no added sugar, no colorants, and no chill filtration. Bottled at 46% ABV, it represents Foursquare's benchmark approach to long-aged Barbadian rum and one of the clearest statements of tropical aging's effect on complexity and integration at a price point that defies the category. Richard Seale, Reginald Leon's great-grandson, reopened Foursquare Distillery in 1996 and has since become one of the most principled voices in global rum production. The molasses used for this 12-year expression undergoes close-top fermentation for nearly 100 hours before distillation, a lengthy primary fermentation that builds depth before the spirit ever sees a barrel. Tropical aging in Barbados accelerates maturation considerably compared to cooler climates, so 12 years on-site produces a level of oak integration and evaporation concentration that would require significantly more time in Scotland or Kentucky. The ex-bourbon barrel program here balances extraction with restraint, allowing the fermentation character and the distillate's natural richness to remain present through the full aging cycle. The nose opens with toasted coconut, nutmeg, caramel, treacle, and vanilla, underlaid with baking spice and a cooked banana note that signals Barbadian terroir. On the palate, rich caramel and honeyed banana chips give way to papaya, toasted hazelnut, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and brown sugar. The finish is long and gently dry, with smoky oak tannins, graphite, and lingering baking spice fading slowly and cleanly. Sip it neat to appreciate the full arc of tropical aging, use it as the backbone of an Old Fashioned where the baking spice and tannin carry through the dilution, or build it into a tiki cocktail that deserves a serious rum foundation rather than a neutral sweetener.
