Freihof Mirtillo Blueberry Liqueur
Bitters and Aperitifs
$40.00
Austria has a long tradition of fruit liqueur production, and Freihof is a fine example of that craft done well. Mirtillo takes its name from the wild European blueberry, smaller, darker, and far more intensely flavored than its American cousin, and that distinction matters in the glass. The color is a deep, jewel-like violet, and the nose is immediately inviting: concentrated wild blueberry, a hint of floral character, and the subtle earthiness that separates the European mirtillo from more generic berry liqueurs. On the palate it is rich but not cloying, with a natural fruit sweetness balanced by the bright, slightly tart edge of the berry itself. The finish is clean and lingering. Versatile behind the bar, it works beautifully in a spritz, adds depth to a gin or vodka cocktail, and pairs naturally with sparkling wine. Equally at home poured simply over ice or alongside a cheese course, where it shines against something sharp and aged.
