Getrank Gruner Veltliner
$25.00 · Sold out
Getrank Gruner Veltliner comes from Austria's Weinviertel, where loess soils and a continental climate produce textbook expressions of the country's signature white grape. This family-run estate has been farming the same vineyards since 1870, and their approach remains refreshingly direct: no oak, no manipulation, just expressive fruit that tastes like Grüner Veltliner is supposed to taste. While other Austrian producers chase richness or try to emulate Burgundy, Getrank delivers the white pepper spice, grapefruit pith, and green apple snap that define the varietal at its best. The Weinviertel sits in Austria's northeastern corner, where generations of the same family have tended these vines. The region's loess soils drain quickly and retain just enough moisture to keep acidity high without sacrificing ripeness. Getrank's winemaking is deliberately hands-off: native yeast fermentation, stainless steel only, and bottling that preserves the piercing freshness Grüner is known for. The nose shows classic white pepper spice alongside citrus zest and fresh herbs, while the palate delivers crisp acidity driving tart green apple and grapefruit flavors toward a clean, dry finish with just enough weight to handle food. This is the bottle to reach for when you're cooking schnitzel, obviously, but it's equally brilliant with anything involving lemon, butter, or fresh herbs. Roasted chicken with herb butter, grilled asparagus, goat cheese salads, and Vietnamese spring rolls all find a natural partner here. It's also one of those rare whites that can handle the spice and funk of Thai or Korean food without getting steamrolled. The high acidity and herbal complexity cut through richness and reset your palate between bites, making it versatile enough to work with takeout on a weeknight or a more deliberate dinner. At this price point, it's hard to find Austrian wine that delivers this much character and drinkability. In stock at Off Premise in Lincoln Park.
