Il Muro Castro Rosso di Toscana IGT

$20.00
Il Muro Castro Rosso di Toscana IGT is what Fattoria Il Muro calls a "Baby SuperTuscan" — a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that borrows the varietal blueprint of Tuscany's iconic reds but keeps the approach light, fresh, and built for the table rather than the cellar. Aged just six months in used barrels rather than new oak, it sidesteps the weight and tannin load of its senior counterparts while holding the structural backbone of the traditional blend. The wine takes its name from the Castro torrent, a mountain stream that runs past the estate's vineyards in the hills above the valley plain. Fattoria Il Muro has been in the Pancaro family for roughly two centuries, farmed continuously for viticulture in a microclimate shaped by galestro-rich soils and the cool influence of the nearby Alpe di Poti. The pronounced diurnal temperature swings — warm days, cold nights — allow the fruit to ripen fully while holding natural acidity, and the estate has leaned into environmentally friendly practices as a result of the grapes' natural health in this setting. The vineyards roll across gentle hillsides that slope toward the Castro stream, where elevation and mineral soils combine to produce structured, aromatic fruit without heavy intervention. The used-barrel program keeps oak influence minimal, so the fruit and savory undertones stay front throughout. The nose opens with floral lift, then turns toward coffee, dark chocolate, and black cherry as it opens in the glass. On the palate the wine is smooth and slightly sweet in feel, with soft, silky tannins and a fragrant mid-palate that carries the dark-fruit core through a clean, medium-bodied finish. The Merlot provides the body and the plush texture, the Sangiovese adds lift and acidity, and the Cabernet Sauvignon anchors the blend with structure and a hint of tobacco on the back end. Pour it with grilled sausages, pizza margherita, or a simple pasta al pomodoro — it's built for the table, not the cellar, and drinks best with food in the first few years after release.
