La Ragnaie Rosso Di Montalcino
$45.00
Le Ragnaie sits in the southern reaches of Montalcino near Castelnuovo dell'Abate, one of the appellation's warmest and most expressive subzones, and their approach to Rosso di Montalcino is anything but an afterthought. Where many producers use their Rosso as a vehicle for declassified barrels or younger vine fruit, Le Ragnaie treats it as a serious wine in its own right, aging it in large oak casks and releasing it later than most of its peers. The color is a clear, translucent ruby with the faint brick edge that signals Sangiovese handled with restraint. The nose is classically Montalcino: wild cherry, dried herbs, crushed flowers, and a saline mineral undercurrent that gives it real sense of place. On the palate it is poised and linear, with bright acidity and firm but fine tannins framing concentrated red fruit, earthy tobacco, and a whisper of balsamic. The finish is dry, long, and genuinely satisfying. This is the rare Rosso that rewards patience as much as it rewards opening tonight. A year or two in the cellar will only improve it, but with a proper decant it already drinks beautifully alongside braised meats, wild mushroom pasta, or anything with rosemary and olive oil. A benchmark for what this appellation can deliver at its price point.
