S.C. Pannell 'Basso' Garnacha, McLaren Vale

Stephen Pannell, a two-time winner of Australia's prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy, is one of McLaren Vale's most acclaimed winemakers, having moved into his own winery in 2014 and built a reputation for freshness achieved through early picking and reduced oak influence. Basso, meaning "low" in Latin, is an early-release, experimental cuvée named for its origins in the sandy soils of the Little Branch Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, made from 100% Grenache (Garnacha) grown on old bush vines around 30 years of age, on Maslin Beach sands over red clay flecked with ironstone. The wine is made with a deliberately low-intervention approach: hand-harvested fruit is inoculated with a wild yeast starter, fermented on skins (with a portion of whole bunches) for around 14 days, then pressed to large, neutral French oak vats for about 10 months of quiet aging. It's bottled unfined and unfiltered with only a small addition of sulfur, preserving the grape's natural vibrancy and texture. The result is a bright, perfumed, medium-weight Grenache that favors elegance and energy over sheer power. Expect an aromatic nose of raspberry, red apple skin, autumn spice, cinnamon, and violets, with the wine's purity of fruit carrying through to a lively, fresh palate of red and blue berries, fine, almost tea-like tannins, and a chewy, mineral-tinged finish touched with iron and charcoal. It's been well received by critics, drawing praise for its perfume, structure, and versatility at the table.
