Why we carry them

Clairin is one of the most honest categories in our whole store. Every bottle is single-village, single-producer, made from fresh-pressed cane juice — not molasses — fermented with wild ambient yeast and distilled in small pot stills the family has usually built themselves. Nothing is aged, nothing is diluted, nothing is filtered. You are drinking what came off the still.

These are also getting harder to keep on the shelf. Haiti's ongoing social and political unrest — gang violence in the ports, currency collapse, disrupted export logistics — has pushed producer prices up across the category. We held our shelf prices where we could and restocked what we could get.

What Clairin actually is

Rhum agricole (fresh-cane rum) has a French Caribbean cousin that most Americans have never heard of. Clairin is that cousin: made in the same way — from fresh sugarcane juice, not molasses — but by small, independent Haitian distillers using techniques that predate industrialization by centuries. Wild-yeast fermentation. Direct-fire copper pot stills. Bottled undiluted at whatever proof the still produced, usually 100–110.

Each bottle is named after the person who made it (Sajous, Vaval, Casimir, Sonson) or the village it came from (Communal is a four-village blend). The category was largely invisible outside Haiti until Luca Gargano of Velier began importing individual Clairins under the Spirit of Haiti umbrella in the mid-2010s. That's how these landed in the US, and it's why they're on our shelf.

How to drink them

Neat, at room temperature, in a small tulip or a copita — the same way you'd treat a serious mezcal or a natural-yeast rhum agricole. A Clairin opens up over ten to fifteen minutes in the glass; give it time. Salt and citrus on the side are traditional. Great cocktail bases too — a Daiquiri or a Ti' Punch made with Clairin is a category-defining pour and completely changes what those drinks taste like.
