2004 R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva
$150.00
The 2004 R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva is a benchmark expression of traditional Rioja winemaking, sourced from estate Tempranillo vines planted on the historic Viña Tondonia vineyard along a bend of the Ebro River in Haro. Produced by one of Rioja's oldest bodegas, founded in 1877, this Reserva follows the house's century-old protocol: roughly six years in barrel with twice-yearly racking and fresh egg-white fining, then extended bottle rest before release, unfiltered. The 2004 vintage is considered a textbook year for Rioja, and this wine shows the hallmarks of a classic growing season combined with patient cellar work. López de Heredia remains one of the last true adherents to Rioja's old-school methods, rejecting modern shortcuts in favor of the slow, labor-intensive approach that defined the region's reputation. The Viña Tondonia vineyard sits on alluvial soils near the river, a site the family has farmed for generations. The estate uses large, neutral oak barrels for aging, allowing the wine to develop complexity without overwhelming the fruit with wood character. Every bottle is hand-corked, hand-labeled, and released only when the winemaking team deems it ready, often a decade or more after harvest. This is winemaking as craft and family tradition, not industrial formula. The 2004 Tondonia Reserva shows a vibrant ruby color tilting gently toward amber, signaling real bottle development without fading. The nose offers a complex, evolved bouquet of dried red and forest fruit, wild herbs, forest floor, leather, and mushroom, layered with vanilla, olive, and a whisper of iodine. On the palate, the wine is rich yet dry, smooth and developed, with firm, finely grained tannins, bright acidity, and a long, harmonious finish. This is a wine built for patience and contemplation rather than immediate fruit-driven pleasure, and it continues to evolve and reveal new layers over hours in the glass. Pair it with lamb, roasted meats, or aged Manchego, or pour it alongside other classic Spanish fare that can stand up to the wine's structure and savory depth.
