2004 R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva
$150.00
Produced by one of Rioja's oldest and most revered bodegas, founded in Haro in 1877, this Tondonia Reserva is a benchmark of traditional Rioja winemaking, made from Tempranillo grown on the historic Viña Tondonia vineyard along a bend of the Ebro River. In keeping with López de Heredia's uncompromising, old-school ethos, the wine spends roughly six years in barrel, racked twice yearly and fined with fresh egg whites, then rests further in bottle before release, unfiltered and true to the estate's century-old practices. 2004 was considered an excellent, textbook vintage in Rioja, and the wine shows it: a vibrant ruby color leaning gently toward amber signals real bottle development without fading. On the nose, expect a complex, evolved bouquet of dried red and forest fruit, wild herbs, forest floor, leather, and mushroom, often compared by tasters to the savory, earthy register of a fine aged Brunello, layered with hints of vanilla, olive, and a whisper of iodine. The palate is rich yet dry, smooth and developed, with firm, finely grained tannins, bright acidity, and a long, harmonious finish that speaks to the wine's balance and aging potential. This is a wine built for patience and contemplation rather than immediate fruit-driven pleasure, a living link to traditional Rioja winemaking as it existed generations ago. It pairs beautifully with lamb, roasted meats, and other classic Spanish fare, and rewards slow drinking, since it continues to evolve and reveal new layers over hours in the glass.
