The 2017 R. López de Heredia Viña Gravonia Crianza Blanco is 100% Viura from old vines, some over 90 years of age, planted near the Ebro River in Rioja Alta. The 2017 vintage was shaped by severe April frost that decimated yields and forced an unusually early harvest, but the resulting wine is considered a triumph of the year, with surprising depth drawn largely from second-flowering fruit. Where most Crianza whites see one year in oak, Gravonia spends roughly four years in used American oak barrels before further bottle aging, making it structurally closer to a Reserva or Gran Reserva, though López de Heredia keeps it at Crianza designation by house tradition. R. López de Heredia is one of Rioja's oldest bodegas, founded in Haro in 1913 and still operating with methods that have scarcely changed in over a century. The winery ferments its wines in ancient oak vats using only indigenous yeasts, then ages them in used American oak cooperage for far longer than the region's designation laws require. Viña Gravonia comes from estate vineyards in Rioja Alta, where the proximity to the Ebro River moderates the continental climate and the old Viura vines develop intense concentration and mineral character. The extended aging imparts gentle oxidative development, a hallmark of the house style, and the wine is only released when the bodega deems it ready to drink. The color is bright golden straw with light amber reflections, signaling the deliberate oxidative approach. On the nose, expect the estate's unmistakable signature: mushroom, white pepper, pollen, macadamia nut, yellow apple, quince, and a touch of sea spray or seaweed. The palate is elegant, saline, and complex, with bright acidity holding up notes of almond paste and citrus peel, leading to a long, subtly bitter, mineral-driven finish. Pair it with grilled fish, shellfish, roasted poultry, or white meats, where the wine's salinity and structure shine.
