2021 Albert Boxler Riesling
$56.00
Albert Boxler's 2021 Riesling is the entry point into one of Alsace's most celebrated family estates, bottled from parcels that draw on the same granite slopes that feed the domaine's Grand Cru holdings in Niedermorschwihr. Made by Jean Boxler, grandson of the estate's namesake, this Riesling is vinified and aged in old foudres beneath the family home, a practice unchanged since the estate's founding in 1673. The 2021 vintage opened with a cool, wet spring before early September delivered some of the sunniest conditions Alsace had seen in years, producing wines of remarkable freshness and concentration. The granite slopes lend a distinctive minerality that runs through the entire palate, giving this wine a texture and sense of place well above its entry-level designation. Domaine Albert Boxler has been in the family for fifteen generations, and Jean Boxler now steers the estate from a cellar so small and so close to the Sommerberg Grand Cru hillside that the terroir is essentially at the doorstep. The Riesling parcels sit on granite-rich soils that define the minerality and precision the domaine is known for across Alsace. Vinification happens in large old foudres, neutral wood that allows the fruit and stone to speak without interference. The approach is traditional, unhurried, and built around letting the vineyard express itself with as little winemaking interference as possible. Aromas of exotic flowers, key lime, stone, and gentle spice open into a palate of crunchy pear, citrus pith, and green apple, with a ripe yet racy finish that balances aromatic intensity with mineral purity. Despite the richness of the 2021 vintage, there is a finesse here that speaks to both the quality of the site and the restraint in the cellar. Pair this with oysters, trout amandine, or a cold roast chicken with tarragon. It drinks beautifully now and will hold for several years as the petrol and honeyed notes develop.
