2021 Graci Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo
$65.00
From one of Etna's most compelling single-vineyard sites, this Nerello Mascalese comes from the Feudo di Mezzo contrada on the volcano's northern slopes, where ancient vines — many pre-phylloxera — push their roots deep into mineral-rich basalt and ash soils at altitude. Graci farms biodynamically, with an unwavering respect for terroir and tradition. The 2021 vintage arrives with the characteristic transparency and nervous energy that defines great Etna Rosso. The colour is a translucent ruby, pale at the rim, betraying the grape's Pinot Noir-like delicacy. The nose is hauntingly perfumed — wild red cherry, blood orange and pomegranate lifting above a smoky volcanic minerality, with suggestions of dried herbs, iron, and dried rose petal. There is a savouriness here that is uniquely Etnean, almost impossible to find elsewhere in Italy. On the palate, the wine is taut and precise, with silky but firm tannins and a vibrant acidity that carries the wine with real energy and length. Red fruit — cranberry, sour cherry — mingles with earthy, stony undertones and a long, saline finish that speaks unmistakably of the mountain. Despite its elegance, there is real substance and structure here, suggesting this will reward further cellaring.
