Les Clefs Du Caladas Chateauneuf-du-Pape
$55.00
Les Clefs du Caladas Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a family-estate red from the northern parcels of the appellation, where some of the Seguier family's vines reach 140 years old. Those old vines—planted on clay-sand soils studded with the galets roulés limestone pebbles that define Châteauneuf—root deeper and yield less, concentrating flavor in every berry. The Seguiers have farmed here for three generations, working parcels named Palestors, Cabrières, and la Bertaude, and this cuvée is their benchmark expression of the appellation's savory, herb-scented character. The domaine sits at the heart of the Rhône Valley, its name drawn from the Provençal word for the ancient stone road that once connected Orange to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Seguier family vinifies with a focus on terroir transparency, allowing the clay-limestone soils and century-old rootstocks to speak through the blend. The northern parcels benefit from slightly cooler nights and better water retention in the clay subsoil, which tempers the southern Rhône heat and preserves aromatic lift. Traditional winemaking methods—long macerations, neutral oak aging—keep the fruit and garrigue aromatics front and center. The wine shows a brilliant ruby color with purple edges, and the nose opens with black cherry, humus, and licorice, layered with rosemary, menthol, and a subtle camphor note. On the palate, you'll find strawberry, lavender, and blood orange alongside the darker fruit, a signature of the cooler northern parcels and the old-vine concentration. This is a Châteauneuf built for grilled lamb, roasted game, or a winter cassoulet—the savory herb notes mirror Provençal cooking, and the structure holds up to rich, fatty proteins.
